Google Bard: What is It and Where Can You Use It
Google Bard is an AI chatbot that uses the PaLM2 language model. Find out all about this productivity tool!
Introduction:
The rise of Artificial Intelligence models has swept the online community and has invaded headlines across the globe. The rise in popularity has brought with it both excitement for technological advancement, as well as concerns about potential fallout from leaning so heavily on AI.
The first thing to note about AI is that it is a tool to be used by humans, not an entity of itself. Simply ignoring this tool will potentially leave you in the dust compared to those who know what it is, where to find it, and how to use it.
The first big AI language model on the market was ChatGPT developed by OpenAI. They have released a number of different iterations of their product as they have gathered more data and improved upon their model. While ChatGPT was taking the world by storm, Google was quietly developing their own competing AI chatbot, Google Bard. This article will dive into the questions of what, when, how, and where of Google Bard.
What is Google Bard?
Google Bard is an incredibly large language model produced by Google AI. It has been trained through one of the most immense data sets of text, code, and languages. It is an AI chatbot that can answer your questions, proofread text, and even generate creative content like essays, emails, poems, stories, jokes, excuses to get out of work, or any text based material.
With the massive amount of information stored by Google, this AI chatbot is extremely powerful at helping you with your online tasks and can make your life and work a lot easier.
How does Google Bard work?
Magic? Well, unfortunately not. Google Bard uses a programmed technique called “deep learning” to help it solve problems, such as predicting text to simulate natural language. This “deep learning” means that it is constantly gathering and processing data and learning to improve itself through the conversations that it has and the content it produces.
Bard utilizes the Pathways Language Model (PaLM2) which learns the connections between words, phrases, conversations, grammar, and everything to do with language to better predict what words should follow each other in a text. This is how it can produce material that appears quite natural, but again, it is simply imitating human language and not organically producing it.
When did Google Bard release?
Google Bard became widely available in May of 2023. It is available in hundreds of countries and currently supports 46 different world languages.
Is Google Bard better than ChatGPT?
An important aspect of these tools to note is that they are both extremely similar and aim to accomplish the same goals. They both help generate text that simulates human language, and both can be used to answer questions and help solve problems. The true difference lies in the data sets that they are built upon.
Google Bard’s data set is larger than that of ChatGPT, but it is also an entirely different library of data. Larger doesn’t necessarily equate to better, but with the backing of one of the world’s largest companies and search engines, it seems likely that Google Bard will be able to outpace ChatGPT in this field. Bard is already being updated much more frequently and has access to more recent data than ChatGPT.
Where do you Access and Use Google Bard?
If you have a Google account, you can access Bard at bard.google.com. There are also other options to utilize this tool in a more accessible and productive format.
Is Google Bard available in an extension?
Yes! Google Bard is available in widget form within the Google Chrome extension Dashy: Side Panel and New Tab Dashboard here.
With this extension, you can have quick access to Dashy Chat (powered by Google Bard) in your Chrome Side Panel, or as a part of a customizable dashboard for your New Tab page. Find out more about Dashy below!
Is Google Bard Free?
You don’t have to spend money to use Google Bard, but it doesn’t exactly come free. These AI language models are constantly learning and harvesting input data to improve upon themselves, so in a way you are trading whatever information you provide the product in exchange for the benefits of AI. On this note, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you don’t provide these AI chatbots with personal information or sensitive material that shouldn’t enter the public domain.
