It took 10 months to go from 0 to 10,000 users. After reaching 9k users with a global marketing campaign from September-November of 2023, we stopped all ads in December. Almost immediately after our ads stopped pushing random users to the webstore listing we began to generate upwared momentum with organic impressions from the Chrome store directly.

Dashy hit 9,000 users, version 3.9 is live and Dashy has officially been available as an all-in-one extension for: Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and Edge for five months.

Our first month update included new widgets and a FireFox launch. In our second month we gave users the ability to embed any website directly into Dashy. The third month included Microsoft Edge store, anonymous Dashy profiles, Microsoft Outlook integration, and more widgets like Spotify and Google Keep.

Let's take a look at month five.

Games Widget:

We launched a new widget that lets you play some fun games in your new tab. Check out classics like Pac-Man and Minesweeper, or runner's like Dino, and reboots like Hextris, you'll find something to waste your time on, we're sure of it!

Embed Google Sheets:

We added the ability to embed Google sheets, specifically because a number of users asked us to. So now you can see all of your sheets in one place. For our power users, maybe not ALL of your sheets, but you could...technically. Check it out! Remember you can resize this widget by dragging the bottom right corner.

Dashy Sponsorship:

Dashy hit 7,000 users, version 3.4 is live and Dashy has officially been available as an all-in-one extension for: Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and now Edge for four months.

Our first month update included new widgets: Translator, Tab Manager, and Todoist, and we launched Dashy as a Firefox add-on.

In our second month we gave users the ability to embed any website directly into Dashy and added the functionality to create duplicate widgets.

The third month included our launch into the Microsoft Edge store, enabling anonymous Dashy logins without an email address, a Microsoft Outlook integration, and more widgets like Spotify and Google Keep.

Browser History Widget:

We launched a new widget that displays your browser history into one convenient location in a grid or list format. This widget includes the ability to view your Top Sites and History so that you can access your most frequented online locations almost instantly. We suggest opening this widget directly in the Dashy side panel or in your New Tabs so that you can always see and quickly click on any links you recently closed or visit often.

Todoist Today View:

We added the Today view to the Todoist widget, simply because a lot of active users asked us to. So now you can see all of your tasks for today in one very cleverly named view called 'Today'. We also added an 'Upcoming' view that will show everything you've got on the horizon. Make sure to try it out.

Dashy hit 4,000 users, version 3.0 is live and Dashy has officially been available as an all-in-one extension for: Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and now Edge for three months.

Our first month update included new widgets: Translator, Tab Manager, and Todoist, and we launched Dashy as a Firefox add-on.

In our second month we gave users the ability to embed any websites they want directly into their Dashy and we added the functionality to create duplicate widgets. That means if you need to see 37 different calendars at the same time, now you can.

We want to thank you for being a part of the Dashy journey, here's what has changed over our third month.

Dashy in the Microsoft Edge store:

Microsoft approved the Dashy add-on in late September, in two weeks we've managed to reach 256 users. So if you prefer Edge to Chrome or Firefox, here's your link. Please note that the side panel is not enabled in Edge. This is a limitation of the Edge browser that has not been addressed by Microsoft just yet. We will obviously include it when they make the necessary changes.

Anonymous Login:

Every day there are some people who download Dashy and then uninstall when they see the login option, which is required to sync your Dashy profile settings across multiple browsers and devices. To address this, we added the ability for users to create an anonymous Dashy without logging in with an email address.

After creating an anonymous account to try out Dashy, you can enable syncing by simply connecting with a Google or LinkedIn account. The choice is yours, to sync or not to sync.

Microsoft Outlook Integration:

Do you use Outlook for your daily meetings? We've got you covered. Dashy now has a Microsoft Outlook widget ready and waiting to help you manage your day with every new tab. Need access to multiple calendars? No problem, just hit the handy Duplicate icon and go ahead and setup a second calendar, or a third.

More Websites Added:

As requested, we have added the following sites to Dashy: Spotify, Google Contacts, Keep, Passwords, Messages, and Poe. If you would like quick access to a specific site you can always create a custom widget in your Dashy, or you can contact us through the Feedback widget with the site you think other Dashy users will enjoy using.

Growth:

On October 10, exactly 3 months after our launch Date of July 10, Dashy reached 4,000 weekly active users in the Google Chrome store. Thank you to the community for your positive reviews in the store, this helps us reach a broader audience on our march to 10,000 weekly active users.

Improvements to your Dashy experience:

• Introduced widget snapping for easy customization and alignment - Toggle this feature on or off in the Settings widget
• Ability to arrange widgets vertically and horizontally - Right click menu
• More backgrounds - Unsplash integration means you might never see a duplicate image again
• iFrame improvements - Ability to use the microphone, and camera within iFrames for any supported website.
• Calendar widget - Now you can add attendees, a location, and also create repeat events. We also added an Events details view to get more info about an event.
• Bookmarks widget - Ability to change the parent folder and now bookmarks open in the same tab you are currently viewing
• Widget toolbar options for Pin and Academy have moved - Right click menu

Our first month included a plethora of updates and improvements, and this month we also made some massive strides and changes. Embedded Websites:

Our biggest update to date has been the ability to add embedded websites to your Dashboard and Side Panel. We have included options to add numerous social media websites like FaceBook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit, and Slack, popular sports pages like ESPN, productivity websites like Google Drive, GitHub, Google Meet, and academic research sites like Google Scholar and JSTOR. You can easily add your own custom websites as well, so customizing your experience is better than ever.

Duplicate Widgets:

Duplicate widgets have also made their way to Dashy, and you now have the ability to integrate multiple Calendars, To-Do lists, and organize them how you like. Along with this, we have added an option to place a search bar powered by Google and their AI in your dock and your Side Panel.

Growth:

If our first month of growth was good, our second month was outstanding. Users from tech hubs and college towns spanning multiple continents have been flooding in to see how Dashy can help improve their time spent online. We have reached over 1k active users through the Chrome Web Store, and we are eagerly working towards breaking our next goal of 10k weekly users.

What is Dashy?

The Birth of Dashy:

Dashy was born from an idea that stemmed from a problem that has plagued the office for years. At its core, the issue was inefficiency and worker overload from having way too many tabs open in their browser to get their work done. The idea was that if all of your tools and apps that you use on a daily basis could be added, arranged, and integrated in one space, users could get more done with less open tabs.

Our CEO Jer, and our CTO Ash worked for years in the tech field and witnessed and experienced that problem all too often. They banded together to design and create a product that would fix the problem, and after nearly two years of work Dashy launched in the Chrome Web Store.

We initially focused directly on the goal of creating a customizable productivity canvas, but soon realized that while many people wanted to focus on work, there were others who would want to simply optimize their browser for enjoyment. That is when we decided to shift our attention from more widgets and integrations towards adding the ability to embed websites.

This addition opened endless possibilities for customizing Dashy. You can create a productivity workspace, or a playground filled with social media feeds, YouTube videos, or whatever you wish to add to your dashboard. The Industry and Competitors:

As stated previously, Dashy seeks to build upon what others have done and improve the user experience. We looked at what competitors like Momentum, Manganum, Start.me, and others got right, and tried to combine and improve upon what they have achieved. People all across the globe are looking for more out of their web browsers, and these companies have tapped into that market in their own niche ways. Momentum creates an inspirational type of New Tab that includes a handful of customization options and productivity integrations. Momentum focuses on motivation and a simple aesthetic, and it proved that millions of people wanted something more from their New Tab.

Manganum was one of the first extensions to realize the potential of the Sidebar. They place productivity tools within the Sidebar so that users can access these tools from anywhere on the web. They include some of the most used tools like Calendar, To-Do, Bookmarks, and quick links to frequented websites. The main drawback is a lack of customization options and users cannot use multiple tools at the same time. The product is excellent, but we wanted users to be able to customize and utilize everything that we offer simultaneously so that they can create the setup that works for their specific needs.

How Dashy is Changing Lives:

The world we live in is becoming increasingly digital. More people are online than ever, and those people are spending more time online than in the past. Dashy is transforming its users’ online life in a positive way. It allows them to consolidate their online life into a single space and provide them with quick access to everything they frequently use.

Instead of flipping through tabs, opening programs, and having multiple windows open, Dashy allows users to have their tools, apps, and websites in a dashboard and/or sidebar for an efficient, simple, and fun online experience. People value their time, so speeding up the work they need to do online provides them with more free time to allocate elsewhere if they desire.

The Dashy Team:

Dashy was conceptualized by our CEO Jer, and our CTO Ash. While they live on different continents in very different cultures, they developed a close friendship while working in the corporate tech world. They both shared a vision of creating something for themselves that would provide some relief from the seemingly endless grind of working for a large company, so they set out to create something of their own.

Somewhere along the line they decided that they needed to add another member to the team to fill a hole that neither were particularly suited for. They decided to bring on Jacob to help take care of written content, communications, and most text related aspects of Dashy.

One of the most important facets of our team culture is involvement. We all participate in the testing process, idea generation, and collaborate to make decisions on direction and approach. Each of us brings a unique perspective, and together we work to find the right solutions to hurdles we face.

With the team spanning from the Pacific Northwest, to India, and Alaska, remote communication and work has been paramount to the early successes Dashy has achieved.

We all use Dashy every day while we work to expand, improve, and test our product. We spend many hours each day at our computers, and have experienced first hand how much easier Dashy makes our daily work.

Moving Forward:

Dashy has made considerable progress in its first few months as a Chrome, Brave, and Firefox extension. We have seen our user base rise from a modest collection of early adopters to over a thousand unique accounts. We have users across 6 continents (waiting on you Antarctica), and our growth has been largely organic to this point.

One of the key components of our early success has been customer feedback. We have experienced a fantastic level of consumer interaction and ideas for us to implement, and we have even built specific features such as the Todoist integration based on a request from one of our users from Poland.

The Dashy team is constantly working to make our product the premier all-in-one browser extension, and we can only achieve that goal by providing our users with what they want. Dashy has a Feedback widget that allows users to reach us with any ideas or issues at any time, and we are always looking forward to customer exchanges.

To update to the latest version, restart your browser and grant the necessary permissions. Alternatively you can click the extensions icon, navigate to "Manage Extensions," and re-enable Dashy from there.

Add Websites to Dashy:

With this update, we have included 25+ websites that you can add to your dashboard and side panel. This list includes popular social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit, as well as other helpful websites like Google Finance, Google Drive, Maps, ChatGPT, and Slack. Take a look at some of the available options:

Add Your Own Websites:

If all of the included options don’t fulfill your dashboard needs, you also now have the ability to embed any website you want to. Just click the + icon in your dock or in the Widgets Explorer, then navigate to the Websites tab to get started. This massive upgrade to customization options means that Dashy can be a productivity workspace, a browser organization tool, a place to view all your fun stuff like social media, or any combination you can think of.

Connect Multiple Accounts:

You can also create Custom versions of widgets with their own name and colored icon. This allows you to integrate multiple widgets with different external accounts. For example, you can have your dashboard show multiple Google Calendar accounts, show Weather in different locations at once, or even have a few Todoist widgets connected to your work and personal accounts.

You can create as many of these custom widgets as you would like, and you can also quickly create duplicate widgets!

Duplicate Widgets:

Another small change we have made is creating a button in each widget's toolbar to quickly duplicate the widget. We want you to be able to customize your workspace as much as possible, so if you want to quickly add another To-Do widget, you can do that.

This feature can help you stay more organized and compartmentalized than ever before!

Multiple Profiles:

Many of you have probably downloaded Dashy as your preferred browser extension due to all of its fantastic productivity tools that help make your work more efficient. We still aim to help you with your goals of being more productive, but we want to provide our users with options.

With Dashy you can create up to three unique profiles, so you can have one for work, one for school, and one for your online fun and enjoyment. With access to 25+ embedded sites offered by Dashy along with the ability to generate up to 50 of your own, you can create an incredibly productive space, or one to distract and entertain you. The choice is in your hands!

If you enjoy using a privacy focused browser like Brave, then you’ll be delighted to hear that we have successfully ported the Dashy Chrome extension to work with the Brave web browser. Brave is built upon the Chromium open source project, so it is quite similar in functionality. The main differences are that Brave includes a built-in ad blocker, website tracking blocker, and a secure search engine called Brave Search.

We want our users to have as many options as possible so that they can create a productive workspace that fits their needs. That’s why we are already available as an extension or add-on in Chrome, Firefox, and Brave, with more to come!

What is Dashy: Side Panel and New Tab Dashboard?

Dashy launched in the Google Chrome Web Store exactly one month ago. We have experienced a tremendous response from users, hit a number of milestones, and have continued to improve and expand the tools and apps you use in Dashy.

To celebrate this one month milestone, we are doing precisely nothing special at all. Maybe we will take a nap, but that really is about it aside from making this celebration post.

We have had a blast building Dashy and growing our community, so we wanted to highlight a few of the accomplishments from our first month on the market.

New Widgets:

We are constantly working on building new widgets to improve our users’ experience and provide them with as many options as possible to maximize their online productivity. Since our initial launch into the Chrome Web Store, we have added Translator, Tab Manager, and Todoist widgets. We have also completely revamped and improved the Bookmarks widget.

We want to build the widgets that our users want and need, so let us know what you want to see from us next!

Dashy Users:

We have seen daily organic growth throughout our first month. In this timeframe we have released 7 versions of the extension, each with their own updates and improvements. We hope to see a continuation of this exponential growth going forward, so if you are enjoying Dashy we would love for you to share it with your friends and colleagues.

Firefox:

On August 8th we finished our build for a Mozilla Firefox Add-On. Most of our growth has sprung up organically through the Chrome Web Store, and we have worked hard at making Dashy easier to find. The Sidebar lets you instantly view and interact with your widgets from anywhere on the web. Simply click on the Sidebar icon, or pin the Dashy extension to your toolbar to create a Dashy icon that opens your Sidebar dashboard.

How to Add the Sidebar to Firefox:

If you haven't added the Sidebar feature to Firefox yet, here are some simple instructions for adding it to your browser.

1. Click the three-bar Menu icon at the top right of Firefox.
2. Click “More Tools.”
3. Select “Customize toolbar…”
4. Click and drag the Sidebar icon onto your Firefox toolbar.

How to Pin the Dashy Extension to the Toolbar:

1. Click the Extensions icon in the Firefox toolbar.
2. Find the Dashy extension and click the Settings icon on the right.
3. Select “Pin to Toolbar.”

Create Your Dashy Account:

Once you have downloaded the extension, you can create a Dashy account by logging in with an email or LinkedIn account. Creating an account will start your free trial of Dashy and you can take a guided tour of the New Tab dashboard as well as the Sidebar dashboard, or you can opt to skip them and explore for yourself.

Dashy is built upon the idea that users should be able to customize a productive workspace that fits their needs. To accomplish this, users need to have as many options as possible. Since our inception, we have included a To-Do list, but some members of the Dashy community have clamored for an integration with the popular app and extension Todoist.

Todoist:

With Dashy v1.7, we have delivered on those requests by creating the Todoist widget! This widget offers integration with your Todoist account, so your tasks can be synced and accessed from your Side Panel, or your New Tab dashboard. You can still use Todoist in more traditional ways, but now you can have quick glance access whenever you need. The widget may be a smaller interface than the main Todoist page, but you still have access to all of your Projects, Sections, Tasks, and Subtasks.

Todoist uses a different system of organizing your tasks than our original To-Do widget, which is why we needed to create Todoist completely separately. That said, you can decide which interface you prefer and stick to your own preference. The To-Do widget isn’t going anywhere, and you can still sync it with your Google Tasks or Microsoft To-Do accounts.

This extension succeeds in creating a minimalist and efficient start page. The addition of the handful of productivity shortcuts is nice, but it isn’t a massive improvement over the default Chrome New Tab.

The spotlight of this extension is definitely on focus and motivation. Momentum gives users stunning backdrops and motivational quotes that both aim to inspire their users. This New Tab also has shortcuts to a few commonly used productivity tools like Notes, To-Do, World Clock, and a pretty cool Pomodoro Timer.

This extension is a very popular one, but its target audience seems to be those who don’t need a whole lot of extra options or tools at their disposal. It is a simple and effective New Tab, and if your needs fall in those categories, it is worth checking out.

Start.me

This extension starts the dive into what a New Tab dashboard can look like. Its main features include the ability to add RSS feeds into large widgets, manage Bookmarks, embed any website into a small block, and a handful of productivity tools like Notes and To-Do.

This New Tab does have a plethora of customization options so users can create a start page that fits their needs. The ability to embed sites is a handy feature, but aside from Notes and To-Do the dashboard tends to direct users elsewhere rather than create a workspace that people want to stay at.

Speed Dial

As the name would imply, the main goal of this extension is to get users to the sites and apps they use in a speedy manner. It utilizes visual bookmarks that create large icons on your New Tab so you can quickly click on the sites you use the most. It also allows you to organize your bookmarks into groups. Users can also search for specific bookmarks within the New Tab page.

The large icons are helpful if you have trouble with small text, and the interface is extremely easy to use. My main complaint is it is essentially just a different way of organizing and presenting bookmarks and little else. While it really is just this single feature, it does that job quite well.

Infinite Dashboard

This extension has more features than many of its competitors, and includes Bookmarks, Apps, Games, To-Do, Notes, links to all sorts of different Google programs like Calendar, as well as Sessions which lets you pick up where you left off in your browser.

The features that this extension has are great, but you have to swap between different screens within your New Tab to navigate. For example, opening your Calendar or To-Do list overlays the screen, so you can really only access one thing at a time. It is really useful to have so much available in your New Tab though.

Leoh New Tab

This one is strikingly similar to Momentum, and uses a minimalist design and a handful of useful features to upgrade your New Tab. It focuses on aesthetics, and produces a very striking homepage. It includes landscape backgrounds, Weather, To-Do, Calendar, and Quick Links to your most viewed pages.

I won’t dive into this one too much more, but it is a viable alternative to Momentum.

Homey

Homey has a large library of background options so you can customize your New Tab. It also utilizes widgets so you can use some tools without having to navigate elsewhere, though their widgets are limited to Weather, Notes, Inspirational Quotes, and Reminders. As many others, it features a Bookmarks Manager.

This extension really focuses on customization with different themes and backgrounds. It is simple and effective, but lacks a lot of productivity features provided elsewhere. It sticks with its branding as it is trying to create a “homey” kind of feel for your New Tab.

This extension is fairly similar to Infinite Dashboard as it really focuses on creating a visualization of your bookmarks. You can organize them into groups, and add as many as you like. This is aimed at people who just want an easy-to-view icon type setup for their bookmarks so they can quickly navigate the web.

An efficient web browser needs to be set up in the most user-friendly way possible. We all have our own preferences, needs, and unique quirks, so customization options are incredibly important when not only selecting a browser, but when deciding how to set it up as well.

The Chrome Side Panel is a fantastic addition to the browser that can help you be more organized and productive. The default setting places the pop-out panel on the right side of your browser, but if you prefer the left side, we have you covered.

How to Move Chrome Side Panel to the Left Side:

The first step is to open Chrome Settings. Click the vertical three-dot icon at the upper right of the browser and navigate to Settings. This will open the Settings tab where you can adjust a wide array of customization options. On the menu on the left of the screen you now just click on Appearance where you will find the option to relocate your Side Panel (see below).

Simplified Instructions:

To swap Side Panel to the left side of Chrome, open Chrome Settings, navigate to Appearance, and select "Show on left."
